The Rome of Portugal and the Cradle of It, Five Monuments in a Day
Two cities that between them account for most of how Portugal came to exist. Braga is first. It is called the Rome of Portugal, and the reason is the concentration of churches: the day takes in the Cathedral, the Sameiro sanctuary and the Bom Jesus funicular, which is three of the four things anyone comes here for. Guimarães follows, and it is called the cradle of the country because that is literally what it was. The Paço dos Duques and the castle are both on the itinerary. Five monuments, a small group, and lunch included. The history and the religion here are the same subject, which is what makes the pairing work.
