Eight-Seater to Braga and Guimarães, Every Room of the Ducal Palace
The day usually opens in the centre of Braga, which has the oldest cathedral in Portugal, the first one built in the country. After that, Bom Jesus do Monte and the sanctuary at the top of it. Lunch is on the way to Guimarães, at a restaurant worth stopping for, and it is a proper meal rather than a sandwich in the van. The afternoon is Guimarães: the castle, and then the Duques de Bragança Palace, visited room by room rather than in a lap of the courtyard. There is free time afterwards in the centre for the shops, the streets and the pastries. The drive back gets into Porto at around 6pm. The vehicles seat a maximum of eight.

Guimaraes Castle
Guimarães Castle, the birthplace of Portugal, with the guide. The walls and the towers, and the early formation of the country, which happened here rather than anywhere else.
Paco dos Duques de Braganca
The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, a 15th-century noble residence built in the medieval manner. Inside are the great halls, the objects and the period furniture, and the guide covers the Bragança dynasty and what the palace was for.
Bom Jesus Funicular
At the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, one of the great pilgrimage sites of Portugal, with the monumental Baroque stairway and the view over Braga. The historic water-powered funicular is there if you want to ride it, and it is the oldest of its kind still working. The guide covers the religious and architectural side of the place, with time to walk the grounds.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro, one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Portugal. It stands on a hilltop with a long view over Braga and the country around it, and the building is neoclassical and unusually quiet. The guide covers its history and its significance, with time to walk the grounds.
Jardim de Santa Barbara
The Jardim de Santa Bárbara is one of the best corners of Braga, next to the old Archbishop's Palace. Time here to look at the garden and, if you want it, a short coffee at one of the cafes around it.
