Guimarães and Braga with Lunch and a Vinho Verde Estate Tasting
Two cities in northern Portugal in one day, with the food and the wine treated as part of the subject rather than as a break from it. Guimarães comes first, the cradle of the country: the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, a 15th-century building in medieval style, and Guimarães Castle, the 10th-century fortress that stands for national independence. Then lunch, Minho cooking, with the Vinho Verde the region makes, followed by a visit to an estate that produces it, with a tasting on site. Braga is the afternoon. The Sé de Braga, the oldest cathedral in the country, Gothic and Baroque layered on the same walls. And the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Baroque staircase and the view back over the city.

Paco dos Duques de Braganca
The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança in Guimarães, Renaissance and medieval at once. Built in the 15th century, with heavy towers and worked ornamental detail. The great rooms and the courtyards show what the Portuguese nobility spent its money on, and the building is one of the best routes into that part of the country's history.
Centro Historico de Guimaraes
The historic centre of Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cobbled streets and small squares that have kept their medieval shape, with the castle and the church of São Miguel among them. The old houses and the traditional shops still trade, and the cafes and restaurants are where the local cooking is. This is the part of the city worth the time.
Igreja de Sao Miguel do Castelo
The Church of São Miguel in Guimarães is a small building with a large history. Beyond the 10th-century architecture, this is where the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, was baptised in 1106. That single fact is why the church matters as much as it does.

Guimarães Castle, which goes back to the 10th century. It stands at the root of the Portuguese nation and it did real work in the defence and the unification of the country. The walls carry that history, and they are walkable.

Se de Braga
Braga Cathedral is one of the oldest in Portugal and the architectural and spiritual centre of the city. Built in the 12th century, the Romanesque structure carries a great deal of ornamental detail and a long history. As the seat of the archbishopric of Braga it did much of the work of spreading Christianity in the region. Inside, the Main Altar and the Baroque altarpieces are the pieces to look at, and the view over the city from the tower is worth the climb.

The historic centre of Braga holds centuries of building in a small area. Cobbled streets and squares, in the oldest city in Portugal. With the Cathedral and the Raio Palace among its monuments, the centre works as an open-air gallery of Baroque and Romanesque. The traditional shops, the old cafes and the restaurants are where the local culture actually is. It is the part of the north that repays wandering without a plan.
Bom Jesus Do Monte
The Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary in Braga is known for its architecture and for what it means to people. The most striking part is the water lift, built in the 19th century. The hydraulic system carries pilgrims to the top of the hill without a climb, which is what it was built for. It is also a serious piece of engineering, and it belongs to the history of the sanctuary as much as the staircase does. It is worth doing at least once.
