Guimarães, Braga or Both, and Sameiro, Second Only to Fátima
Two cities that could not be less alike, and both of them decisive in the history of Portugal. This one can be booked as either or as both. Braga is the religious half. Two thousand years of history, the standing of the religious capital of the country, and a city better known locally for its 18th-century houses, its gardens and its parks than for anything a guidebook lists first. The Sameiro shrine above it draws more pilgrims than anywhere in Portugal except Fátima. Guimarães is the medieval half, where the nation was founded. Its historic centre is World Heritage, and the sign on the city walls still says as much. The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, from the 15th century, is part of it.
