Inverness

A full day out of Inverness in a small group, west across the Highlands to Skye, with Eilean Donan on the way. One thing to budget for: entry to the castle is optional and paid locally, not included here. The road runs along Loch Ness first, then climbs through the mountains towards the west coast. The peaks give way to sea lochs, which the Vikings used as a way into these lands. Eilean Donan stands at the meeting of three of them, and there is time to go inside if you want it. Over the Skye Bridge, the day turns to the island's own history: the myths, the rival clans, and the prince who hid here as a fugitive. Lunch is in Portree, the main town, with its harbour front. The rest of the day is Skye's coastline. The Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing, which is the one most day trips leave out. Then back through the Highlands to Inverness. Meet 15 minutes before departure, across from the Victorian Market entrance, and look for a blue or yellow bus.
