Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan with Strome Castle from Loch Carron

InvernessA day out of Inverness to Skye, with two castles rather than one: Eilean Donan up close, and, between April and October, a view across Loch Carron to the ruin of Strome Castle, which most Skye itineraries drive straight past. The road stops first at Invermoriston, for the bridge and the facilities, then runs the length of Loch Ness. Eilean Donan sits on its own island at the head of Loch Duich, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, and there is time to look round it and the ground it stands on. Over the Skye Bridge to Portree for lunch. It is a small harbour village but the island's capital, ringed by rocky cliffs and hills, with the boats in front of you while you eat. Then the north of the island: a photo stop at the Old Man of Storr and another at Kilt Rock. Refreshments at the Kyle of Lochalsh on the way back, and the Loch Carron stop for Strome Castle in season. Meet at Railway Terrace, Inverness, IV1 1NW. Look for the coach, or for the sign on the lamp post.

Eilean Donan Castle
After Loch Ness the route continues to Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland. It stands on its own island at the head of Loch Duich, and there is time here to explore the castle and the ground around it.

Portree Harbour
From Eilean Donan the journey carries on to the Isle of Skye, over the Skye Bridge and into the small village of Portree for the lunch stop. Portree is a harbour village and the capital of Skye, ringed by rocky cliffs and rolling hills, which makes it a good place to eat with the boats in view.
