Book the Castle Tickets Yourself; the Courtyards Cost Nothing
A private day with a premium vehicle and an English-speaking driver, and no fixed itinerary: Neuschwanstein and Linderhof are visited at whatever pace you set, with pickup and drop-off at the door. The stops people usually add are Linderhof, Ludwig II's royal villa; Füssen, the medieval town that works well for lunch; and Ettal Abbey, a Benedictine monastery with its own brewery. The part to read before booking: entrance tickets are not included, and they have to be booked online in advance. This matters more at Neuschwanstein than anywhere else in Bavaria, because the day's allocation goes early. What costs nothing is the outside: the exteriors and the courtyards can be walked without a ticket, which is a real option if the interiors are sold out. Access to the Marienbrücke depends on the weather.

Schloss Neuschwanstein
Neuschwanstein, the castle behind Disney's Sleeping Beauty one, with the Alps around it and Ludwig II behind it. Getting up: the castle stands high on its hill, and it is about a 40-minute walk, or a shuttle bus or horse-drawn carriage for a local fee. The Marienbrücke: the bridge over the gorge, and the view of the castle that everyone knows before arriving. Inside: entry is a guided tour of about 35 minutes, through the king's private apartments and the ceremonial halls.

Schloss Linderhof
Linderhof is the smallest of Ludwig II's palaces and the only one he saw finished, built as a private retreat in French Rococo. Inside: a tour of about 25 minutes takes in the Hall of Mirrors and the king's bedroom, and the Tischleindeckdich, the dining table that was set below and raised into the room, so that a king who preferred to eat alone could. The gardens: a Baroque park, with the Neptune Fountain throwing its jet on the hour. The Venus Grotto: an artificial stalactite cave built as a stage set for Wagner's operas, with an underground lake the king was rowed across in a gilded shell boat.

Fussen
Füssen is the medieval town at the end of the Romantic Road, close to Neuschwanstein. The old town is cobbled and narrow, the houses painted in the Bavarian colours, and the lanes are full of shops and cafés. Above it stands the High Castle, the Hohes Schloss, late Gothic with an illusionistic painted facade. Below that is the Baroque complex of St Mang's Abbey, which holds the town museum.
Ettal
Ettal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the Bavarian Alps, near Oberammergau and Linderhof. It was founded in 1330 by the Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, and its Baroque basilica, with its dome and Rococo interior, is the reason people stop. It is a pilgrimage church, built around a venerated statue of the Virgin. The community is still active. It runs a school, a brewery going back to 1609, and a distillery known for its herbal liqueurs. The basilica can be visited and the monks' products bought on the spot.
