Füssen

Two castles and a monastery in one private day: the most photographed building in Bavaria, the only palace Ludwig II finished, and the Benedictine abbey at Ettal. What this itinerary adds that most do not is the outside. The entry to Neuschwanstein is booked with a guaranteed time slot, but the guide also walks you around the exterior properly, with the history that goes with it, rather than delivering you to the door and waiting. Linderhof is the second stop, and the guide's argument there is worth the drive: this was not a holiday house. Ludwig spent most of his time in the Graswang valley, and for a period he ran Bavaria from it.

  1. Schloss Neuschwanstein

An unhurried day at Neuschwanstein, with private transport in an air-conditioned vehicle and pickup at the hotel or address you choose. The booking includes advance entry with a guaranteed tour time, and a proper tour of the exterior with your private guide: the history, and the stories that go with the building. Lunch is at whichever of the local restaurants you pick, with suggestions from the guide.

  2. Schloss Linderhof

The second stop is Linderhof, the only palace Ludwig II finished and the one he kept private, out of the political life he had no patience for. It stands in the Graswang valley, hunting country his father had used, and Ludwig spent more time here than anywhere else. For a period he governed Bavaria from it, which makes this the closest thing the fairy-tale king had to a home.

  3. Ettal Abbey

The Benedictine monastery at Ettal, founded in the 14th century, for the Bavarian Baroque. Then a 45-minute drive back to your hotel.
