No Guide, No App, No Palace Ticket: Ten Stops on Your Own Phone
An outdoor route through the Schönbrunn grounds, with an audio guide on your own phone. Read the first line twice before booking: there is no palace admission included, and none is needed, because the whole route stays outside. There is also no guide waiting for you. The route takes in the palace facade, the Baroque parterre, the Neptune Fountain, the artificial Roman Ruin, the Obelisk Fountain, the small Gloriette in the trees and the large one on the hill, the Palmenhaus, and the Tiergarten, the oldest zoo in the world.

Schonbrunn Palace
Seen from the outside only on this route. This was the Habsburgs' summer residence, where state ceremony and ordinary family life went on in the same building. Behind the yellow facade are the salons, galleries and mirrored halls where the music, the diplomacy and the family quarrels all happened.

Schonbrunner Gardens
A formal Baroque park, which means nature cut into straight lines and long views. Marble figures, clipped hedges and flower beds lead towards the fountains and the hill at the far end.
Neptune Fountain - Schonbrunn
Neptune in a rocky grotto at the end of the main axis, tritons and nymphs around a shell chariot, and the water running down into a wide basin. It is the point the whole garden aims at.
Roman Ruin
Broken arches and half-fallen columns beside a still pool. They look ancient and are not: the ruin was built as a ruin. Moss and birds have since made it convincing.
Schonbrunn Obelisk Fountain
A stone obelisk rising from a grotto, carried on the backs of turtles and topped by an imperial eagle, with water coming from masks and jars around the base.
Small Gloriette
A small octagonal pavilion among the trees on the eastern slope, with windows and a balcony over a quieter part of the park.
Gloriette Schloss - Schonbrunn
The arcade on top of the hill, and the best view in the park. From its terrace the palace, the gardens and the city line up in one sweep.
Palmenhaus Schoenbrunn
A tall glasshouse of iron and glass, with palms reaching the roof. Inside the air turns warm and humid, which in January is the whole point.
Tiergarten Schoenbrunn - Zoo Vienna
The Tiergarten, the oldest zoo in the world, inside the imperial park. Historic buildings around modern enclosures for animals from across the world.
