Brasov

Four stops from Brașov in a group of no more than seven: Peleș, Bran and Râșnov, plus the Orthodox monastery at Sinaia. The guide collects you from your hotel in Brașov and handles the entries, so the queues at the ticket offices are not part of the day. The transport is a Mercedes V-Class van with air conditioning front and back, leather seats and a fridge with cold drinks on board. On a day with this much driving in it, that is not a detail.

  1. Peles Castle

Peleș Castle, the summer residence of the Romanian royal family, built in the 19th century for Carol I, largely in German Renaissance style. It has 160 rooms and 30 bathrooms. What people remember is the woodwork, carried out by Bernhard Ludwig of Vienna.

    Costo extra

  2. Manastirea Sinaia

An Orthodox monastery of the 17th century.

    Costo extra

  3. Rasnov Citadel: Garden and Panoramic View

Râșnov fortress was built in the 13th century on a rock above the valley, which is why it was taken only once, in 1611. It existed to shelter the villagers below when an attack came. Inside are the ruins of a Catholic chapel, the defensive towers, and what is left of some 80 houses and the school. The well was dug by two prisoners and goes down 146 metres.

  4. Bran Castle

Bran Castle takes you back to the 14th century, and it is Gothic: built on a rock in the valley to watch the border and hold the way into Transylvania. In 1897 the Irish writer Bram Stoker attached the name Dracula to this part of the world, and the castle has carried it since. High walls, cold towers and rooms that keep their secrets: the setting does the work.

    Costo extra

  5. Brasov Historical Center

A short drive round Brașov, past the main sights of the city.
