Jeronimos Monastery

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos from the outside, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the masterpiece of Manueline architecture: worked facades, carved stone, and the cloisters behind them, all of it built out of the Age of Discoveries. A walk around the monastery and the gardens that surround it, with time for photographs of a building that has stood here since the early 16th century. The explorers, navigators and historical figures are carved along both flanks, and the whole thing is centuries of maritime history in one object. This stop is included only with the walking tour option, which allows time to look at the monument and the ground around it without rushing. The Tagus is right there, and so are the photographs. Torre de Belem

The Belém Tower from the outside, one of the landmarks Lisbon is known by and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 16th-century fortress was built to defend the city and to mark the way for the explorers of the Age of Discoveries. This stop is included only with the walking tour option, with time along the riverside to look at the Manueline architecture and the carved detail on it. The tower against the Tagus is the photograph most people come for. The guide covers what the tower was for, its defensive role, and where it sits in the maritime history of the country.
