Porto

Two of the oldest cities in Portugal, privately, for people who came for the heritage rather than the photographs. Braga goes back to the Roman Empire. It has been a trading city for two thousand years, well placed on the routes that ran to Rome in the 1st century BC, and it was called Bracara Augusta after the emperor Augustus. That history is still readable in the remains and in the shape of the centre. Guimarães is the cradle of the nation. It was the ground on which independence from the kingdom of León was fought for, and the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first king. The medieval street plan and the buildings on it survive intact enough that UNESCO listed the city in 2001. The route also climbs Penha, above Guimarães, where the granite boulders can be walked under as well as over and the view runs across the whole valley.

At the top of the avenue, by the fountain.

  1. Guimaraes Castle

    Ticket and guided visit.

  2. Centro Historico de Guimaraes

The medieval centre, walked with a cultural guide through the narrow streets and along the fortified walls.

  3. Montanha- Parque da Penha

Open country with a Catholic shrine at the top, enormous granite boulders you can climb over and get underneath, and a long view over the city and the land around it.

  4. Bom Jesus Do Monte

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019. The sanctuary, the stairway and the gardens together make one of the most complete arrangements the Catholic church ever built.

  5. Torre de Menagem

The last piece of the city castle still standing, and untouched.

  6. Se de Braga

An 11th-century Catholic cathedral and one of the finest in the country. Teresa de Leão, the mother of the first king of Portugal, ordered it built.

  7. Braga

A city two thousand years old that holds its Roman, medieval and modern parts together without friction, which makes it good ground for an unhurried guided walk.
