  1. Jeronimos Monastery

    One of the clearest examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style in the country. King Manuel I ordered the monastery and church built when the first of Vasco da Gama's ships came back safely from India. The scale of it still surprises people.

  2. Time to taste the well known Pastéis de Belém

    Time for the Pastéis de Belém, the Portuguese pastry everyone has heard of, with a glass of port beside it.

  3. Torre de Belem

    By the Tagus, a visit to the Belém Tower, Manueline in style and military in purpose: it was built to keep pirate ships away from Lisbon.

    The monument built for the 500 years of the Portuguese discoveries.

  5. Time Out Market Lisboa

    Free time for lunch at one of the main food halls in the city. The traditional dishes and tapas get introduced first, the regional specialities and how they are made with produce straight off the market. What you eat after that is your business.

  6. Miradouro Da Senhora Do Monte

    The highest viewpoint in Lisbon, with the whole city below: the 25 de Abril Bridge, the Christ the King on the far bank, São Jorge Castle, and every main quarter laid out in order.

  7. Castelo De Sao Jorge

    A visit to the medieval castle, declared a National Monument in 1910. From the gardens inside the walls the view runs a full 360 degrees over the city.

    The lift built by a student of Gustave Eiffel, which still carries people from the downtown up to the Largo do Carmo.

  11. Chiado

    A walk through the largest open air shopping district in Lisbon, past the Livraria Bertrand, the oldest bookshop in the world, and into the Filigrana Museum for the Portuguese jewellery.
