Private Sintra Where Either Monument Can Be Swapped, with Cabo da Roca and Cascais
A private day where the two included monuments are not fixed. Pena Park and the Quinta da Regaleira are the default pair, and either one can be traded for the Moorish Castle, the Monserrate Palace or the National Palace of Sintra, which is the sort of decision most Sintra tours make for you. Pena is Romanticism at its loudest, gardens that hold the mist and a view over half of Estremadura. Regaleira is the opposite temperament: tunnels, grottoes and the Initiation Well, an estate built as a puzzle. Sintra's historic centre gets an hour and a half, which is enough time to walk it properly and eat something. Then the coast. Cabo da Roca, where continental Europe stops and the cliffs drop into the Atlantic. The Boca do Inferno, where the sea has cut its way under the rock. And Cascais, half an hour around the bay and the old streets, to finish.

Sintra
From Lisbon, take the train to Sintra station.
Centro Historico de Sintra
An hour and a half in the old streets, with the traditional shops and the local sweets. The National Palace of Sintra can be visited in that time if you want it. The ticket is not included, unless it is taken as a replacement for one of the main monuments on the itinerary. (1h30. National Palace optional, ticket not included unless it replaces a main monument.)

Castelo dos Mouros
A medieval fortress along the top of the ridge, its walls holding several centuries of history. Not part of the standard itinerary, but it can be taken instead of one of the main monuments.
Quinta da Regaleira
Grottoes, gardens and the Initiation Well, the most symbolic and the most enigmatic site in Sintra. The Monserrate Palace can be taken instead, a romantic retreat with exotic gardens and an architecture of its own, as a replacement for one of the included monuments.
Cabo Da Roca
The westernmost point of continental Europe, with the Atlantic below and a sense of space that is hard to get anywhere else.
Boca do Inferno
Rock formations at the cliff edge where the sea comes in hard and puts on a show worth stopping for.
Cascais
The day ends in this coastal town, with 30 minutes for the bay, the old streets and the pace they keep.
