Regaleira Guided to the Chapel and the Tower, with Pena and Monserrate as Add-Ons

The Quinta da Regaleira on its own, properly, with the entry ticket included and a guide who works the symbolism rather than the postcard views. The estate is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Palácio da Regaleira is the start of it, Neo-Manueline facades worked over every surface. Then the gardens: grottoes, towers, tunnels running under the paths. The Initiation Well is the piece everyone knows, a spiral staircase descending as a figure of rebirth, with its links to alchemy, Freemasonry and mythology. The guided route also takes in the grottoes, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity and the Regaleira Tower, which most visitors walk past on their way to the well and where the view over the estate is. What the guide adds is the reading: an estate designed as a passage through life, death and the pursuit of knowledge, and a set of stories that make sense of why the stone says what it says.
