Alfama Up to the Castle in Three Hours, Told Through the Siege of 1147
Three hours on foot, climbing through Alfama to the Castle of Saint George, with one event holding the whole thing together: the siege of Lisbon in 1147. The castle is where Lisbon started. Several civilisations held this hill in turn, and what stands now, towers and battlements, looks out over the city and the Tagus from the best position in it. The guide covers the history of the castle in detail, with the siege at the centre of it, and everything else that comes up along the way, from what is happening in Portugal now to why the food is the way it is. The route also takes in Lisbon Cathedral and the Portas do Sol viewpoint, where the whole of Alfama is laid out below. The ticket line at the castle is skipped, which on a three-hour tour is the difference between seeing the castle and queuing for it.
