Summer Palace
The Summer Palace, the best preserved of the imperial gardens, in the morning or the afternoon. The guide's subject is the Empress Dowager Cixi: how she lived here and what it cost. Her opera house, the rooms built for her birthday celebrations, the longest painted corridor there is, and Kunming Lake.
Temple of Heaven
Then the Temple of Heaven, the largest complex of worship buildings in the world, put up by the Ming and Qing emperors. The park around it is where retired Beijingers spend the afternoon over cards and chess, and walking through that is half the point of coming.
