The Only Synagogue in Vienna That Survived the War, and Schnitzel at Noon
A full day in Vienna with a private guide, and it starts somewhere unusual: the World War II memorial on Morzinplatz, rather than a palace. What follows is the old city on foot. St Rupert's, the Stadttempel, which is the only synagogue in Vienna to come through the war intact and was built in 1826, the Anker Clock, Hoher Markt and the oldest square in the city, Mozart's former apartment, St Stephen's Cathedral and the Plague Column, then the Roman remains at Michaelerplatz. The Hofburg comes next, with the Habsburgs and Empress Elisabeth, and around it the Neue Burg and the Ringstrasse, the Augustinerkirche where royal weddings and burials took place, the Spanish Riding School and its Lipizzaners, the State Opera and Albertinaplatz. Lunch is at the Naschmarkt: a breaded schnitzel and a local beer, eaten in the market itself. The day ends at Schönbrunn, with the gardens and then an hour inside the palace on skip-the-line tickets, which is where most tours of Vienna begin rather than finish.
