Tower of London Opening Ceremony, Then Westminster by Boat
One booking that covers both royal ends of London, and the link between them is the river rather than the Underground. The morning starts before the queues, at the opening ceremony led by a Beefeater, which puts you in front of the Crown Jewels with the halls still empty. The guide takes the outer walls first, Traitors' Gate and Tower Hill, then you go through the complex at your own pace: the royal artefacts, the ground Anne Boleyn walked, the armour of Henry VIII, William the Conqueror's White Tower, and the ravens. The fortress has watched the city and the Thames since the 11th century. Then a boat along the river, with the guide naming what goes past: Tower Bridge, Shakespeare's Globe, St Paul's Cathedral, the Southbank, London Bridge. You land in Westminster for the walking half. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and the centuries that turned a palace into the seat of British democracy. Westminster Abbey, tied to the last Anglo-Saxon king and now a flagship of the Church of England. Horse Guards Parade, where the mounted cavalry stand and where the official entrance to Buckingham Palace is. St James's Palace, built on the site of an old leper hospital and the oldest royal palace in the UK, still an official residence. Then Buckingham Palace itself, 775 rooms of it. Meet at the Tower of London Ticket Office; the guide holds an Urban Saunters sign. By taxi, ask for Petty Wales. The nearest tube is Tower Hill. The tour ends around Buckingham Palace.
