Two Stops, No Fortress: the LiBEARty Bear Sanctuary and Bran Castle
A day from Brașov with two stops rather than the usual four, which leaves proper time at each. The first is LiBEARty, one of the largest wildlife welfare projects in Europe. More than 100 bears live there, all of them taken out of captivity where they had been mistreated and badly kept. Seeing them in woodland rather than behind bars is the point of the stop, and it takes as long as it takes. The second is Bran Castle. The Dracula name comes from Vlad Draculea, the Romanian voivode Bram Stoker borrowed from when he wrote his character; the castle itself and the novel are two separate things, and the visit covers both. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure.

The first stop, and the longer of the two. More than 100 bears live at the sanctuary, all of them rescued from captivity where they had been mistreated and kept in poor conditions. They are seen in woodland enclosures rather than cages.

Bran Castle, the one sold as Dracula's. The name traces back to Vlad Draculea, the Romanian voivode Bram Stoker took it from; what the castle actually was is a separate story, and the visit covers it.
