Walls Fourteen Metres High and Five Thick at Prejmer, from 1427
A small-group day from Brașov with an English-speaking guide, pairing Bran Castle with two Saxon fortified churches, Hărman and Prejmer. The Saxons, the Sași, arrived in Transylvania in the 12th century and built strongholds across the region. Their mark is still on the medieval towns of Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Mediaș and Sebeș, but the fortified churches scattered through the countryside are the heavier legacy, and they are what this day goes to see. Prejmer is on the UNESCO list and among the best-preserved fortified churches in eastern Europe. Built in 1427 on a Latin cross plan, in Gothic style, to hold out against Ottoman attack: the walls stand 14 metres high and are 5 metres thick, and the way in is a long tunnel through masonry of the same thickness. Hărman is a Romanesque basilica with Gothic additions, still with its west tower, its chapels and its water moat. The paintings inside date from the 13th century. Bran is the third stop, a 14th-century fortress-palace on its hill. Entry is paid at the gate, at your own expense.

Bran Castle
South out of central Brașov by air-conditioned car or minivan, about 30 minutes to the village of Bran, under the Bucegi Mountains in the southern Carpathians. The castle is a 14th-century fortress-palace, and entry is paid at the gate at your own expense. Inside, Gothic furniture and armour, and the guide on how the Dracula association arose: Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century nobleman held here in 1462. Then back through Brașov for the Saxon churches at Hărman and Prejmer.

Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer
Prejmer, UNESCO listed and one of the best-preserved fortified churches in eastern Europe. It was built in 1427 on a Latin cross plan, in Gothic style, against Ottoman attack: walls 14 metres high and 5 metres thick, entered through a long tunnel cut through the same depth of masonry.
