Alcázar Still Reserved for Royalty: Guided Palaces, Gardens on Your Own
The Royal Alcázar went on the World Heritage list in 1987, and it is still the residence of the Spanish royal family in Seville. Outside the hours when visitors are let in, the building remains for their exclusive use, which is a rarer arrangement than the queue outside suggests. Its origins go back to the early Middle Ages. Some Islamic work survives, worked to a fineness that later builders did not attempt, but what dominates is Mudéjar and Gothic, with Renaissance and Baroque additions layered on afterwards. The result is a palace with no single style and no single date. The Patio de las Doncellas is the room everyone photographs: a long pool along the middle of the courtyard, arcades on either side, and Mudéjar plasterwork above that comes back doubled off the water. Game of Thrones filmed here, and several corners will be recognisable. The guided part covers the palaces, with priority access at the gate. Once it ends, the gardens are yours to walk at your own pace. Check-in is at the office on Calle Alemanes, where the group is organised and headsets are handed out.
