Legend Against Truth at Bran, and Time at the Market Outside It
A private day from Brașov to Bran Castle and Peleș, unhurried enough to include shopping and something to eat. At Bran the guide separates the two versions of the story: what is known about Vlad the Impaler, and what the legend has made of him. Both are worth hearing, and knowing which is which improves the castle. There is time at the souvenir market outside the gates. Among the Dracula merchandise there is real work in wool and wood, made locally. Then Peleș, at Sinaia, the Pearl of the Carpathians. The setting is half of it; the interiors are the other half, and the detail in every room is where the day goes.
