Inside Bran Only Their Guides May Speak, and Sinaia Is Named for Sinai
The day starts in central Brașov and runs 30 to 40 minutes to Bran Castle, finished in 1382, standing on a rock between Măgura and Dealul Cetății. Then Sinaia, the mountain resort the Romanian royal family used as their summer retreat. Peleș, with its 160 rooms, was built for Carol I between 1873 and 1914; Pelișor, with 99, went up next door for his nephew Ferdinand and Queen Marie. A short stop at the Sinaia monastery, built in 1695, with the newer church added in 1842. Last, Cantacuzino Castle, finished in 1911 by the architect G. Cerchez for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino: neo-Romanian, with an art gallery inside and the Bucegi mountains in front of it.

Bran Castle
Bran Castle was finished in 1382 and stands on a rock between Măgura and Dealul Cetății, with the valley below it. Inside are the rooms and the Dracula legends that made the name. One rule to know: only the castle's own guides are permitted to guide inside, at an extra charge. The tour guide can come in with you and give some explanation, but no more than that.

Peles Castle
The summer residence of the first king of Romania, Carol I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and his wife Queen Elisabeth of Wied. Peleș was built between 1873 and 1914 to the designs of the architect Karel Liman. The guiding inside is in English, either by the tour's own guide or by a castle guide, through more than 160 rooms, each done in a different style: Venetian, Turkish, Imperial, French and the rest.

Manastirea Sinaia
One of the most important religious and historical sites in Romania, and the reason the town is called Sinaia at all. It was built in 1695 by Prince Mihail Cantacuzino after his pilgrimage to Mount Sinai in Egypt, where he had visited the monastery of Saint Catherine.

Cantacuzino Castle stands in the mountains, built between 1901 and 1911 by Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, one of the richest men in Romania at the time.
