Linderhof comes first, reached around ten, and the stay there is an hour: the Moorish pavilion, the gardens, and the option of a 25-minute guided tour of the interior. Then the road to the Ammergau Alps, through Oberammergau, which the bus passes without stopping. The afternoon belongs to Neuschwanstein. The bus reaches the area at about 1:15 and the guide hands out the entrance tickets there, so nobody queues at a ticket office. The stay is three to three and a half hours, which sounds generous until you count the 35 minutes it takes to get up to the castle on foot or by shuttle. Entry to the interior is at about 3:45, with a 45-minute guided tour inside, and the coach leaves at around five for the two hours back to Munich. Between the two, Hohenschwangau, where Ludwig spent most of his childhood, is where the story of Neuschwanstein starts. Both palaces are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Note that the late-departure version of this tour does not include Linderhof, and the drive through Oberammergau is on the Classic and VIP options only.

Departure from Karlsplatz 21 (Stachus) at 08:30. First stop is Linderhof Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, reached around 10:00 (not on the late-departure edition of the tour). Linderhof is the smallest of Ludwig II's three royal castles, built in the 19th century as a hunting lodge and finished in French Rococo. The Moorish pavilion is in the grounds, and the stay here is one hour. A guided tour of the interior is optional and lasts about 25 minutes. The rest of the time goes on the gardens.

The bus passes through Oberammergau, the alpine village, without stopping. The road itself is the reason this stretch is on the itinerary.
Queen Mary's Bridge (Marienbrucke)
A viewpoint within walking distance of the castle. Keep an eye on the castle's admission times: visits are optional and schedules can change. In winter, access to the Marienbrücke depends on the weather and on what the castle administration decides that day.

Around 1:15 PM: arrival in the Neuschwanstein area. The guide hands out the entrance tickets here, before you set off up to the castle.

The stay is 3 to 3.5 hours, with free time for lunch, shopping and photographs. Allow about 35 minutes to reach the castle, on foot or by the shuttle bus, which does not run when there is snow. Weather and access permitting, the Marienbrücke gives the panoramic view of Neuschwanstein and the Bavarian Alps. At about 3:45 PM you go inside, on a 45-minute guided tour of the interior. Departure is around 5:00 PM, and the drive back to Munich takes roughly two hours.
