Hohenschwangau

Hohenschwangau is the village under the two castles, with the Alps around it and clear lakes below. There is free time here for lunch, for the souvenir shops, or for standing still and photographing what is above you.

Discover Hohenschwangau Castle

Hohenschwangau Castle was the summer and hunting residence of the Bavarian royal family. Maximilian II rebuilt it in the 19th century, and his son Ludwig II spent much of his childhood in it. Inside are the decorated rooms, the original furnishings and the wall paintings, and the history of the Wittelsbach dynasty. This is the world Ludwig grew up in, and the legends painted on these walls are the ones he built Neuschwanstein out of.

Queen Mary's Bridge (Marienbrucke)

In your free time you can walk up to the Marienbrücke, weather and access permitting. The bridge hangs above the Pöllat gorge and gives the view of Neuschwanstein with the Bavarian Alps behind it. It takes about 45 minutes to walk there and some of it is uphill, so wear proper shoes. Access can be closed at short notice for weather, maintenance or safety.

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing covering the palaces of Ludwig II. It stands above the Bavarian countryside, towers and all, and inside are the rooms he had built out of medieval legend and stage design. Ludwig is the reason it looks the way it does, and the reason it never got finished.
