A Mythologist and Opera Singer, and the Train Instead of the Van
Most visitors move through Neuschwanstein quickly and leave without the stories painted on its walls. This tour is built the other way round. The guide, Thomas, holds a doctorate in mythology, which is what the castle is decorated with: the medieval sagas are in the rooms, and he reads them. He has been telling stories for 32 years. He is also a trained opera singer, so the part Wagner played in what Ludwig built gets explained by someone who knows the music from the inside. The group is your own party and nobody else, and the day is arranged around what you want from it. The travelling is done by first-class train rather than by SUV, which is the quieter way to cross Bavaria and the lighter one on a region that carries a great deal of traffic already.

Bayerstraße 10A, München
Meet at Track 28.
Munich Central Station
The day starts here, boarding a first-class compartment on a German train. The Bavarian countryside goes past and the Alps get higher on the horizon. On the way, Thomas tells the story of Ludwig, the king who built the castle, and what the castle was meant to be: a work of art, a storybook, and a version of how life might have been lived instead.
Fussen
Arrival at Füssen station, where a taxi is waiting. Less than ten minutes through the small town of Füssen.
Hohenschwangau
Hohenschwangau is the village at the foot of the Tegelberg, and Neuschwanstein stands on the side of that mountain above it. Time here for the village, the other castle in it, the shore of the Alpsee, and a short lunch.
Schloss Neuschwanstein
Up the mountainside on foot, by shuttle bus or by horse-drawn carriage, watching the castle grow as you get closer, and then the view from Mary's Bridge. The tour inside is led by a State of Bavaria guide, as the castle requires, and Thomas comes with you: the official guide covers the rooms, Thomas covers the sagas they were built to tell. Afterwards there is time in the other parts of the castle, the balcony, the kitchen, the café and the shops. Thomas photographs and films as the day goes on.
Hohenschwangau
Back down the mountain to Hohenschwangau, with a little time for the shops or a snack.
Munich Central Station
The first-class compartment again, and Bavaria going past the other way. Thomas tells how Ludwig's life ended, and what the king and his castle still say to anyone paying attention.
