The Venus Grotto, Reopened in 2025 After Ten Years of Restoration
Linderhof and Neuschwanstein by coach from Munich, in a smaller group, with an English-speaking guide who runs both castle tours and answers questions for the rest of the day. What sets this itinerary apart from the other Ludwig II day trips is the third building: the Venus Grotto in the Linderhof grounds, an artificial cave with a lake inside it, which reopened in 2025 after ten years of restoration. It is only on the itinerary between 1 May and 15 October. After Linderhof there is time for the grounds and the scenery around them, then the road to Hohenschwangau, lunch, and Neuschwanstein in the afternoon. Drinks are available on the coach and some snacks are part of the package. Entrance fees are included.

Sonnenstraße 1, München-Altstadt-Lehel
Stand at Karlsplatz (Stachus) with your back to the fountains and the Obletter toy shop is on your left. Carry straight on along Sonnenstraße to the Fielmann opticians. The guide and the coach marked "Mentor Reisen" are there.
Stachus
Meet at 8:45 a.m. at Sonnenstraße 1, 80331 Munich, where the coach is marked "Mentor Reisen". The driver and guide check you in there. Departure at 9:00 a.m., past a few Munich landmarks the guide explains on the way, heading for the Linderhof grounds and the Venus Grotto. From 1 May the meeting time is 8:15 a.m. and departure is 8:30 a.m.

Arrival at the Linderhof car park around 10 a.m. The guide collects the tickets at the ticket centre, then the group walks up to the Venus Grotto together, about 20 minutes on a slightly uphill path. The guided tour of the grotto, an artificial cave with a lake in it, lasts about 15 minutes and is live in English. The colours and the interior are the reason it exists. It reopened in 2025, after ten years of restoration done to the original. Note: available in summer only, from 1 May to 15 October.
Schloss Linderhof
Around 11 a.m. the group leaves the grotto for Linderhof Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2025. The gardens are walked on your own, then the palace entrance. Linderhof is the smallest of the palaces and the only one fully furnished, built in the 19th century in French Rococo and Baroque. Versailles is behind both the architecture and the gardens. The guided tour is live in English at 11:40 a.m. and lasts about 30 minutes. The coach leaves at 12:30 p.m.
Oberammergau
Between Linderhof and the village of Hohenschwangau, under Neuschwanstein, lies Oberammergau, the village of artists. It is known for its painted facades, the Lüftlmalerei, and for woodcarving. The Passion Play staged there every ten years covers the last week of the life of Jesus, from Palm Sunday to Easter. The village is toured from the coach, which covers more ground than a short stop on foot would.
Queen Mary's Bridge (Marienbrucke)
About 50 minutes on the road and the coach reaches the village of Hohenschwangau. The guide collects the castle tickets at the ticket office, and the time after that is yours. The Marienbrücke is worth it. Built in 1845, with parts of the original railing still in place, it gives the view of Neuschwanstein that everyone has seen before they arrive.
Schloss Neuschwanstein
Neuschwanstein is 30 to 40 minutes uphill on foot, or by shuttle bus or horse-drawn carriage for a fee; the guide gives the details. The guided tour of the castle starts shortly after 4:00 PM and runs about 25 minutes with an audio guide. Go straight back to the coach afterwards: the return to Munich leaves at 5:30 PM.
