Schloss Neuschwanstein
First stop is Neuschwanstein, up in the southern Bavarian Alps. The guide covers the history of Ludwig II, a life that was strange and did not end well, while you look at what came out of it. The tour goes inside the castle.
Oberammergau Museum
On to the village of Oberammergau, where the Passion Play is staged once every ten years. Time on your own here for lunch or for the painted houses, the Lüftlmalerei. The guide will point you at the places that actually serve Bavarian food.

Schloss Linderhof
Then Linderhof, another of Ludwig's houses. It sits deep in the forest and it is where the king spent most of his time. Inside are the Hall of Mirrors and the Audience Chamber. Outside is the Venus Grotto, an artificial cave built after the Blue Grotto of Capri; check whether it is open when you go, as it closes for maintenance.
