MunichFüssen sits in the foothills of the Alps, and the castle above it is the one everybody has seen before they arrive. This is a small group leaving from Munich, and the guide does two things a map cannot. The first is the castle itself, Neuschwanstein, walked with someone who knows the story of the king who built it. The second is where to stand outside: the lake, the gorge with its waterfall, and the vantage point that gives you Hohenschwangau from above, the other castle of the same family and no less handsome for being less famous. One practical point that decides bookings: the castle entrance fee is not part of the price. You pay it on the day. What booking in advance buys you is skip-the-line access, so the fee is paid without standing in the ticket queue, which in high season is the part that costs hours.

Schloss Neuschwanstein
Neuschwanstein is called Germany's Cinderella castle, and it is the wrong Disney film: the castle it inspired is the Sleeping Beauty one at Disneyland. The entrance fee is not included and is paid on the day, but booking this tour in advance gets you skip-the-line access, so none of that time goes on the ticket queue. Inside, the guide tells the story of the reclusive Bavarian king who commissioned the place in the 19th century. Ludwig II was thought mad, and he wanted a fantasy castle in the mountains; it was still unfinished when he died. Outside, the tour takes in the best vantage points for the towers and for what surrounds them: the lake, the gorge and Hohenschwangau castle.
