Brasov

A private day from Brașov covering the two castles everyone comes to Romania for, Peleș and Bran, with the last stop left to you. If history is what you are here for, Râșnov fortress. If you would rather finish with a walk, Poiana Brașov, the best-known mountain resort in the country. The choice is made on the day. It works for a private group or for independent travellers, and the castles hold children's attention as well as anyone's.

  1. Peles Castle

First stop is Peleș Castle, the most important German-influenced architectural ensemble in Romania and the second most visited attraction in the country, after Bran. It has 160 rooms, and what is remarkable is how modern it was: fully electrified in its day, with a lift, and a glass ceiling that slid open on command. The king used it to show his guests the summer night sky.

  2. Bran Castle

Next, Bran Castle, the building attached to Count Dracula, close enough to Brașov to make the drive easy, and set in country worth the journey on its own. The character first appears in Dracula, the novel Bram Stoker published in England in 1897. The name itself is less sinister than it sounds: it comes from the Order of the Dragon, a crusading order to which both Vlad the Impaler and his father Vlad Dracul belonged.

  3. Rasnov Citadel: Garden and Panoramic View

The last stop is your choice: Râșnov fortress or Poiana Brașov. Râșnov is one of the finest fortresses in Romania, and film crews keep coming back to it; Cold Mountain, the Oscar-winning film with Nicole Kidman, was shot here. Recent archaeology shows the rock has been defended since the time of the Dacians, more than two thousand years ago. Before Bran Castle existed, Râșnov was where merchants were taxed on the way through. From the top you can see the Bucegi ridges, the Postăvaru massif and Piatra Craiului, and most of the town of Râșnov below, at 650 m, where Romanian and Saxon culture meet.

    Costo extra

  4. Poiana Brasov

Poiana Brașov is the busiest mountain resort in Romania, and every winter it fills with skiers and snowboarders. It works like a small town: hotels, restaurants, huts, a church, an ice rink, a zoo, a pool, sports grounds and gyms, slopes with artificial snow and night lighting, ski lifts, chairlifts and cable cars. After a day of castles, a walk here is the other way to end it.
