Seville

Admission is booked in advance and the guiding is done by a licensed local guide. The route runs through the royal rooms, the Mudéjar architecture, the courtyards and the gardens. The Patio de las Doncellas is where the palace explains itself: a long pool down the middle, arcades either side, and the whole thing built so that symmetry, water and light do the work. The Salón de Embajadores next door was designed to intimidate visiting delegations, and the guide reads the symbols worked into it. The gardens close the visit, and they will be familiar to a lot of people before the guide says anything. The fountains and shaded paths were used as the Water Gardens of Dorne in Game of Thrones, and the production changed almost nothing to make them work. What holds it together is the argument of the building: Islamic craft, Christian patrons, and a palace that kept being rebuilt by rulers who wanted their predecessors' aesthetics along with their power. Two options at booking. The Alcázar alone, or the combination that adds Seville Cathedral and the Giralda, with the Gothic interiors, the tomb of Columbus and the view over the city from the tower.

  1. C. Joaquín Romero Murube, Sevilla

Meet the staff next to the La Inmaculada Concepción monument in the middle of the Plaza del Triunfo. They wear purple Crown Tours t-shirts. Arrive 30 minutes early: latecomers cannot be guaranteed a place.

  2. Real Alcazar de Sevilla

Into the UNESCO-listed royal palace, where Moorish craft and royal ambition run into each other along every corridor. The guide sets it up so the Alcázar reads as one continuous story rather than a sequence of rooms.

  3. Patio de las Doncellas

A stop in the courtyard the palace is known for, where symmetry, water and light carry the meaning. This is where the guide makes the design decisions legible, and explains what the perfection was for.

  4. Salon de Embajadores

The most theatrical room in the palace, built to impress delegations and to state who held power. Look up, slow down, and let the guide decode the symbols and the craftsmanship worked into the surfaces.

  5. Finish in the gardens, where Seville turns cinematic

The visit ends in the gardens. Shaded paths, fountains and corners that a lot of visitors recognise as Dorne's Water Gardens from Game of Thrones, filmed almost exactly as they stand.

  6. C. Joaquín Romero Murube, Sevilla
