London

This is the version of the three-stop day that runs to a published clock, which matters when you are deciding how much time you actually get anywhere. Check-in is 7:30am at Bus Stop 1, Bulleid Way, Victoria, London SW1W 9SR, and the coach leaves at 8:00 sharp. Windsor Castle at about 9:30. The castle is 900 years old and sits on a wooded hill above the Thames, with landscaped gardens around it and a turret over them. Inside, the State Apartments hold priceless work by Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci, and St George's Chapel is the burial place of former monarchs including Henry VIII and Elizabeth II. The coach pulls out again at about 11:30. Stonehenge at about 1:15pm, and the jump is from a 900-year-old castle to a 5,000-year-old monument. What the circle meant has been lost: a temple for sun worship, a healing centre, a burial site, a calendar. Nor is there agreement on how the stones were carried so far and raised with the most primitive of tools. Oxford is the last stop, and the only one done on foot. It has the oldest university in the English-speaking world, and the walk goes through the college courtyards and cobbled lanes that C.S. Lewis and Bill Clinton knew as students, past the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library, one of the oldest in Europe. The narrow alleys and old squares here are unspoilt. The coach leaves Oxford at about 5:45pm and reaches London around 7, at Gloucester Road Underground Station.
